Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), through community service and Community Service Programs (KKN), implements various urban farming mentoring programs to help communities develop urban agriculture and strengthen food security. One of these activities was carried out by the Faculty of Science and Mathe.matics (FSM) UNDIP in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in Rowosari Village, Tembalang, Semarang, under the theme “Community Food Security through Integrated Urban Farming with Catfish Farming and Vertical Hydroponics.” The activity involved undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students from FSM UNDIP as well as the UMS team. The program began with socialization activities in March 2025, followed by training, mentoring, and hands-on practice in developing an integrated agricultural system
The UNDIP urban farming program is also implemented through Community Service Programs (KKN), including a simple hydroponic training program using used bottles and gallons in Wonokerto Village, Magelang Regency, in August 2024. KKN students provided education to local youth on hydroponics as an alternative form of agriculture that can be practiced on limited land at relatively low cost while utilizing used materials. The activity developed practical skills in creating a simple hydroponic system and introduced opportunities to develop hydroponics as an agricultural business idea. Another program conducted by KKN students was hydroponic urban farming education using plastic bottle waste at SDN 01 Cibelok, which taught participants how to utilize limited land while simultaneously reducing plastic waste.
These activities support SDG 1 (No Poverty) by strengthening community capacity and developing food-based economic potential. They also contribute to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by improving food security and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through the implementation of urban agriculture on limited land. One of UNDIP’s latest developments also integrates urban farming with a circular economy by utilizing paper waste as a growing medium for microgreens and developing an aquaponic system that combines hydroponic vegetable cultivation with catfish farming. The program is designed as an urban farming model that can be adopted by urban communities to support food self-sufficiency.
