SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals

Education for SDGs commitment to meaningful education

Embedding Sustainability in Education at Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP)

  1. Policy Foundation and Strategic Commitment

The integration of sustainability in Universitas Diponegoro’s (UNDIP) education system is formally mandated through the Rector’s Circular Letter on the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) No. /UN7.P/SE/2020.
This directive requires that all study programs embed SDG-related materials into their curriculum, research, and community service. Each faculty appoints an SDG focal point responsible for planning, implementation, and continuous monitoring.

Through this regulation, sustainability becomes a core element of institutional quality assurance. The policy ensures that teaching and learning processes build environmental literacy, ethical citizenship, and problem-solving skills aligned with the UN SDGs.

  1. Integration of Sustainability in Curriculum

2.1 University-Wide Coverage

Sustainability has been deeply embedded across all levels of education at UNDIP. Out of 9,848 total courses offered, 9,722 (98.72%) incorporate sustainability-related themes such as climate action, renewable energy, circular economy, marine protection, and social inclusion.
Across 13 faculties, all 142 study programs—from undergraduate to doctoral—include SDG-based learning outcomes. Each curriculum is reviewed regularly to maintain relevance with national and global sustainability competencies.

2.2 Forms of Integration

Sustainability education is implemented through three interconnected mechanisms:

  1. Mandatory Education – Core sustainability modules are included in the general education curriculum, ensuring that every student understands global sustainability challenges.
  2. Program-Specific Content – Courses such as Sustainable Urban Planning, Environmental Economics, Marine Biodiversity Conservation, and Renewable Energy Systems embed sustainability principles within their disciplines.
  3. Elective and Cross-Faculty Courses – Students may choose sustainability-focused electives, micro-credentials, and internships linked to climate resilience, waste management, or sustainable innovation.
  1. Educator Capacity and Academic Support

UNDIP’s teaching and research excellence are driven by 1,902 lecturers and researchers across its faculties. The SDGs Center and Academic Quality Assurance Board regularly conduct workshops and seminars to strengthen the capacity of lecturers in integrating sustainability principles into course design and evaluation.

These programs encourage the use of interdisciplinary and problem-based learning approaches that promote critical thinking, collaboration, and community-based sustainability projects. Faculty champions lead curriculum renewal efforts to ensure that sustainability remains embedded across academic programs.

  1. Co-Curricular and Student Engagement

Learning for sustainability at UNDIP extends beyond formal coursework through experiential and co-curricular initiatives designed to shape students into agents of change.

  • KKN Tematik on SDG’s engages thousands of students in rural and coastal communities, implementing sustainability projects on waste management, renewable energy, and community resilience.
  • Student Clubs mobilize students to design and implement eco-projects, monitor carbon footprints, and promote biodiversity on campus.
