Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) actively contributes to sustainable land management and coastal resilience through education, research, community engagement, environmental rehabilitation, and collaboration with government and international partners. These initiatives address major environmental challenges in Central Java, particularly land subsidence, coastal flooding, sea-level rise, coastal erosion, and climate change.

Key initiatives include:

1. Joint Course 2025: Sustainable Coastal Urban Futures

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Engineering, UNDIP, in collaboration with Handong Global University, organized the Joint Course 2025: Sustainable Coastal Urban Futures. The program focused on spatial planning, settlements, and livelihoods in the coastal area of Semarang, particularly Mangkang Wetan, which faces increasing environmental pressures from climate change, sea-level rise, coastal flooding, and land subsidence.

Through online sessions, workshops, focus group discussions, and field visits conducted from 8 September to 5 October 2025, students and participants explored sustainable approaches to coastal spatial planning, settlement development, and community adaptation. The program strengthened the integration of academic learning with real-world challenges in vulnerable coastal environments.

2. Land Subsidence Monitoring and Community Engagement through ICZM UNDIP

The Center for Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) UNDIP, in collaboration with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) and local community monitoring groups (Pokmaswas), conducts periodic elevation measurements to monitor land subsidence along the Semarang coast.

The monitoring activities provide scientific data to understand changes in land elevation and support evidence-based approaches to sustainable land-use planning, coastal risk reduction, and climate adaptation. Through this initiative, UNDIP combines scientific research with community participation in addressing one of the most significant environmental challenges facing the Semarang coastal area

3. Sustainable Coastal Infrastructure and Hybrid Sea Wall Development

UNDIP researchers and experts have collaborated with the Government of Central Java to explore sustainable coastal infrastructure solutions for the Semarang–Demak coastal corridor. One of the proposed approaches is a Hybrid Sea Wall, designed to reduce the impacts of chronic tidal flooding (banjir rob) while responding to the interconnected challenges of land subsidence and coastal vulnerability.

The initiative demonstrates UNDIP’s contribution to developing science-based and environmentally conscious infrastructure solutions for long-term coastal resilience.

4. Wetskills Challenge Indonesia 2025

The Wetskills Challenge Indonesia 2025, held in Semarang from 7–19 June 2025, brought together young water professionals and students from different countries to develop practical solutions to urban water challenges.

The program addressed issues including land subsidence, freshwater scarcity, tidal flooding, and sustainable urban water management. By connecting international participants with local universities, experts, and stakeholders, the initiative encouraged innovative approaches to sustainable water and land management in rapidly changing urban and coastal environments.

5. Mangrove Rehabilitation through KKN-T SDGs 2025

As part of the KKN-T SDGs 2025 Community Service Program, UNDIP students, supervising lecturers, and local communities collaborated on a flagship mangrove seedling and coastal rehabilitation program in Demak Regency.

The activity used environmentally friendly approaches to support the rehabilitation of degraded coastal areas. Community participation was a central component of the program, with lecturers providing technical guidance while students worked directly with local residents. The initiative aims to address coastal abrasion and environmental degradation, while strengthening community awareness of the importance of protecting coastal ecosystems.

Integrated Approach to Sustainable Land Management

Together, these initiatives demonstrate UNDIP’s integrated approach to sustainable land and coastal management. The university combines spatial planning, scientific monitoring, climate adaptation, sustainable infrastructure, ecosystem restoration, community participation, and international collaboration to address complex environmental challenges.

Through these programs, UNDIP not only supports the sustainable use and rehabilitation of land and coastal ecosystems but also contributes to building climate-resilient communities and sustainable urban and coastal futures in Central Java.
